Ten ways to enjoy your picnic table
Think a picnic table is just somewhere to eat your sarnies outside? Think again: there are actually a wealth of different ways to enjoy your picnic table. Picnicking in your own back yard
We'll start with picnicking on a picnic table! May sound obvious, but there is something lovely about being able to bring this fun outdoor activity from the public domain into your own back yard. All the benefits of an outside picnic, but with the kitchen (and bathroom!) within easy reach!
Get back to nature
The average UK back garden is a haven of nature if you just take the time to notice. What better way to make time than by grabbing a steaming mug of coffee or cocoa, wrapping up against the morning or evening chill and patiently waiting for the wildlife to come calling. From the best of British birds, to the ever-depleting bumble bees, timid hedgehogs and flagrantly bold foxes - even urban gardens have much to offer. Let your picnic bench become your nature hide!
Romantic al fresco dining
Dining on picnic benches doesn't have to be confined to picnic lunches. When the weather is warm, why not light some candles, lay out a linen tablecloth and your best china, chill the wine and enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars?

The British love a barbecue and being outdoors in the good weather in general; who can blame us when our winters seem so long? Simply having a picnic table outside can in fact increase your living space. Gain a new perspective
Finally, we're betting that you don't make the most out of the bottom of your garden. Most of us use the patio or lawn directly outside the back of our house the most, at best keeping the back of the garden neat and tidy and full of flowers, but rarely using it as much as we do the rest of the garden. Positioning your picnic bench at the bottom of the garden could give you a new perspective on your garden and indeed your house.

Just beyond the flower garden at the end of the lawn
the curvature of the earth begins,
sloping down from there
over the length of the country
and the smooth surface of the Pacific
before it continues over the convex rice fields of Asia
and, rising, inclines over Europe
and the bulging, boat-dotted waters of the Atlantic,
finally reaching the other side of the house
where it comes up behind a yellow grove of forsythia
near a dilapidated picnic table,
then passes unerringly under the spot
where I am standing, hands in my pockets,
feet planted firmly on the ground.
It's about how all the world is connected. The narrator imagines that the entire globe is somehow part of his garden, or just beyond it, and how it stretches all the way around to come up behind him. In looking at the growth taking place in his own yard, he feels that he's part of a larger world that has been going on forever. The subtle suggestions in this are the most interesting things, I think. The image of the dilapidated picnic table is also a connective image, as picnic tables are communal objects built for everyone. The fact that this particular table is falling apart indicates that it is old and perhaps neglected, but it still exists, just like certain parts of the world. This ends with a clever little allusion to the fact that the narrator, too, is planted to the ground like another flower in his garden. The fact that he's facing west has some importance too, since the sun sets in the west. There are many implications of that fact, all relating to death, which also connects everyone.
I'm not a big fan of Collins, but this poem is okay. Hope my insights add to yours.
