The Moon in the Bible versus the Quran (10)

The Moon is mentioned in the Bible 41 times, 32 times in the Old Testament and nine times in the New Testament. The Moon is mentioned in the Noble Quran 25 times.

In the Bible, Revelation 6:12, 8:12 and 21:23 say: 1) there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black and the whole moon became like blood, 2) and the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars and 3) the city has no need of the sun to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it and its lamp is the Lamb (respectively).

In the Quran, verse 7:54 says that that the sun, the moon, and the stars are compelled to Allah's order. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

In the interpretation of this verse, it is said:

Chapter 7: AL-ARAF (THE HEIGHTS)

Verse 7:54 of the Noble Quran in four different translations:

  

QARIB: your Lord is Allah, who, in six days created the heavens and the earth, and then willed to the throne. He throws the veil of night over the day. Swiftly they follow one another. The sun, the moon, and the stars are compelled to his order. His is the creation, His is the command. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

 

SHAKIR: surely your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six periods of time, and he is firm in power; he throws the veil of night over the day, which it pursues incessantly; and (he created) the sun and the moon and the stars, made subservient by his command; surely his is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

 

PICKTHAL: lo! Your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then mounted he the throne. he covereth the night with the day, which is in haste to follow it, and hath made the sun and the moon and the stars subservient by his command. his verily is all creation and commandment. blessed be Allah, the Lord of the worlds!

 

YUSUFALI: your guardian-Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): he draweth the night as a veil o'er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: he created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under his command. is it not his to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the cherisher and sustainer of the worlds!

The meaning of the verse:

  

Surely your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days.  Had He willed He could have created them in an instant; but the reason for His not having done so is that He wanted to teach His creatures to be circumspect.

Then presided upon the Throne, a presiding befitting of Him

He cloaks the night with the day, that is, He covers each one with the other: each following the other in swift pursuit.

And the sun and the moon and the stars have been made subservient; have been subdued, by His command, by His power.

Verily, His is, all, creation and the command, in its entirety.

Blessed, magnified, be Allah, the Lord, and the Master of the Worlds!

In other words, Allah has made the sun and the moon and the stars subservient by His command, by His leave.

His verily is all creation, the creation of the heavens and the earth

His verily is the commandment i.e. the judgment of people on the Day of Judgment.

Blessed be Allah, the Possessor of grace;

It is also said that this means: elevated is Allah; far exalted is Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

He is the Master and Disposer of the Worlds.

why are all the planets, stars, moons, comets somewhat spherical in shape?

in the lack of an atmosphere and with limited gravity, most shapes in space revolve into a sphere.

It is because it is a very good shape, and you get the most volume for the least amount of surface area.

it is the same reason that bubbles form in the shape they do.

here is what the lancing state journal says
Yes, Planets seem to be spheres, not cubes or cylinders or oddball rocky shapes. Some smaller bodies such as asteroids or Mars moons Phobos and Deimos, do have odd shapes, but larger bodies like the nine planets and most of their moons do look like spheres. That's because of the nature of gravity. You can think of gravity as a force that points inward toward the center of the planet so that every part of the surface is pulled evenly toward the center, resulting in a spherical shape.

Of course, planets are not perfect spheres because mountains and valleys and even skyscrapers are all deviations from the spherical shape. However, as planets get larger, gravity gets stronger, until eventually large objects on the surface are crushed under their own weight. That's why we don't have mountains that are 50 miles high or skyscrapers that are 2,000 stories tall. Planets stay basically spherical because any large deviations get crushed.

Although gravity keeps planets close to spherical, there are other forces that cause deviations from the basic spherical shape. For example, the rotation of the earth once every 24 hours, causes an apparent centrifugal force which creates a bulge at the equator. In fact the earth's diameter at the equator is 7,926 miles while the diameter between the poles is only 7,900.
