Caring For Insulated Coolers
There is so much to do in the spring and summertime. Just about any activity is a great excuse to grab your friends and get outside to enjoy the weather. Whether it's a picnic, a hike, or just a day at the beach, you're going to need beverages to keep you from getting dehydrated and you're going to have to eat. Plus, who doesn't love to a cold bottle of water and a sandwich while lounging on a white sandy beach? Insulated coolers make keeping your food and beverages cold possible. However, there are some things to know about these frosty items before you purchase yours.
First of all, when you are keeping your food and beverages cold with insulated coolers, pack food that's already cold inside of them. Putting room-temperature bottles of water in a cooler isn't going to make the bottles any colder than they were before.
It's also important to keep insulated coolers in the shade. When a cooler is sitting under the sun's burning rays, parts of it can melt. If you're picnicking, try to arrange yourself near a shady spot. You can also cover the cooler with a light colored towel.
When you are going on a picnic, you're probably going to take perishable items with you. This might be anything from a jar of mayonnaise to a turkey sandwich with cheese. Even though the whole idea of insulated coolers is keeping your food cold, you should never leave perishables in a cooler for extended periods of time. If you've already eaten and have to leave those leftovers in the cooler while you're still enjoying the day, you will need to throw them away once you get home.
Lastly, while caring for your cooler while you're using it is a good idea, it is of paramount importance that you clean the cooler once you're completely done with it. Just like a car or other item, keeping a cooler clean affects its reliability. To do so, you can use bleach water or you can clean it with alcohol-based wipes. Even once you clean the cooler, you must dry it out completely. Leaving a wet cooler in a moist environment can cause mold and mildew to grow, ruining the cooler. In order to totally dry out your cooler's tiny scratches and cracks, wipe it out and then set it out in the sun for a few hours.

What are some really great foods for a beach picnic?
Family fun type foods that keep well in a cooler.
Fruit: Pre-cut watermelon into wedges and pop in a ziploc bag.
Grapes- seedless taken off of the stem and put in a bag.
Sandwiches: I buy little potato rolls from wal-mart or HEB and put condiments and lettuce and tomatoes and cold cuts and cheese on them. This makes for small easy to handle sandwiches.
You can also do tuna or chicken salad. Really anything works so long as they are kept on ice.
I wrap them individually in waxed paper and then put them in a ziploc bag. That way people can just take as many or as few as they want out.
Soda pop and juices in the little cans or bottles depending on what is cheaper. And of course, water. But I buy the smaller ones. So that if sand gets in one they can just grab another. And so that they don't have to worry about drinking a big drink.
Chips. This is one time when I spring for individual servings of chips. Or I buy a big bag and divide the chips into the snack sized bags. You don't want wee ones with sandy hands ruining the bag for everyone.
A couple of gallon bottles of water. And a hand sanitizer. I don't cool the water. It is for rinsing sand off prior to eating. And, for rinsing feet before getting in the car. But then I hate a dirty car, lol.
Brownies, cookies or whatever, bagged individually. Either store bought or homemade and bagged in snack size ziploc bags.
Really I wouldn't worry about things being too fancy. The fun of the beach is the beach. Most people remember the waves more than the food.
But, you can still go fancier if you want. You can make salads, lobster rolls, shrimp rolls, etc. Just make sure it stays on ice the entire time.
If you have kids, though, make a few pb and j sandwiches or cheese sandwiches just in case they do not share the adults taste buds.
If you do have a bbq grill available at the beach or you are bringing one, then make certain your hamburger patties are made up beforehand. And your toppings are prepared ahead of time. The beach is not the place to mix up patties or slice veggies. And don't forget the hot dogs for the kids or the fixings for smores.
